NGC 2437

Constellation: Puppis
Open Cluster
Discovered by Messier in 1771, he labeled this one M46, it is about 5,500 light-years away from us.  Astronomers put the age of 46 as about 300 million years old. If you look at the top part of the cluster you will see a bubble or smudge.  This is a planetary nebula, NGC 2438.  Not too bad for a little 8 inch telescope.  The cluster is only about one degree from M47, another, if smaller, open cluster.
