Globular Cluster
Constellation:  Sagittarius
This guy was discovered in 1752 by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille while he was in South Africa.  Our boy Messier tried to observe this cluster from Paris, it was too low in the sky for him to get a clean shot at it.  He did finally did get to see this one and recorded it as M55, in 1778. 
This globular cluster is some 17,600 light-years from earth, with a mass of some 269,000 times of the sun.   M55 has some 55 variable stars within its realm.
